‘Take It Or Leave It’ – A Tribute to The Runaways

Take It Or Leave It” – Available via Main Man Records

Look up the definition of Bad Ass Chicks in the dictionary, and you will find The RunawaysCherie Currie, Joan Jett, Lita Ford, Sandy West, Jackie Fox, Vicki Blue.   Some of y’all might be too young (ahem) to remember the real band, but hopefully you at least saw the film, starring Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning that kinda/sorta laid out just what these baby broads were up to in the late 1970’s.

I received a terrific press release today about this tribute album:

Before Hole, before The Pretenders, before The Slits, there were The Runaways! Whether you consider them to be proto-punk rockers or heavy metal guitar heroes, there is no doubt that they helped change the landscape and the perception of women in the male-dominated field of rock n’ roll forever.

The true sign of a successful tribute is that it shines a spotlight on the songs, and Take It Or Leave It does just that. This compilation brings attention to the original performances while also showcasing each band’s unique interpretation. Artists from various musical backgrounds participated on this project, each donating their time and resources to help Main Man Records honor The Runaways. Some of our very special guests include The Donnas, Shonen Knife, The Adolescents, The Dandy Warhols, Richard Barone (of The Bongos), Derwood Andrews (of Generation X), Toilet Boys, Care Bears On Fire (with Earl Slick of David Bowie/New York Dolls), Kittie, Starz, David Johansen (of New York Dolls) and Kathleen Hanna (of Bikini Kill/Le Tigre) & Peaches, (whose collaboration was produced by Ad Rock of the Beastie Boys) as well as members of Frehley’s Comet, Monster Magnet, The Fastbacks, The Cucumbers, The Doughboys and Cousin Oliver from The Brady Bunch, Robbie Rist!

Interspersed with the music are mock radio ads by broadcast legends Rodney Bingenheimer, Carol Miller & “Mr. Marty” Martinez, candid comments from Johnny Ramone and a recollection of the band’s appearance at CBGB’s by noted radio personality Meg Griffin.

Apparently there was some sort of minor bitchfight stemming from Joan Jett’s management team regarding “reputation“…

via NME:

“The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages. Jett and Currie’s lawyer Oren J Warshavsky said: “This isn’t about money. This is strictly about preserving reputation and quality that both Joan and Cherie are known for.”

What? Since when does Joan give a crap about a “(Bad) Reputation“–especially when this album is a TRIBUTE as well as donating a portion the proceedse to American Institute for Cancer Research in the name of Sandy West, The Runaways’ late drummer. Sheesh.  However, it seems nothing much is going further with this supposed lawsuit.

Hey, Joan?  Just simmer down. It’s all good.  In fact, it’s GREAT!  (My favorite is “You’re Too Possessive” covered by the Cali Giraffes.)
