That Michael Jackson Hologram Was Really Creepy, You Guys

2014 Billboard Music Awards - Roaming Show

The 2014 Billboard Music Awards were held Sunday night in Las Vegas. If you’re as old as me (I just turned 28), you probably found yourself asking “who the hell is this?” at least 3 times throughout the show, which was pretty lackluster to say the least. Ludacris sort of hosted it, a lot of big stars were nominated but didn’t attend, and then there was that weird ass Michael Jackson hologram.

The always gorgeous Jennifer Lopez performed twice, opening the show with Pitbull and Claudia Leitte to perform their song “We Are One (Ole Ole)” for the FIFA World Cup. Not as catchy as Shakira‘s song from 4 years ago. Speaking of, Shakira performed as well, and though we love her, we don’t always love her voice. JLo later accepted the “Icon Award” and told us to “Have faith, dream big, think big, and know that anything is possible.”

Robin Thicke made a desperate plea for his estranged wife Paula Patton to take him back with “Get Her Back.” Lorde looked like an extra from ‘American Horror Story‘ while performing “Tennis Court” and she picked up two new trophies for her mantle. Katy Perry demonstrated that her fan base must be made up of 12-year olds, or that she has the mind of one. Then I wondered why all these Country boys wear such tight pants. Let your balls breathe, boys!

But the thing everyone waited for was the much hyped MJ hologram. It danced and sang er…lip synced along to the song “Slave To The Rhythm,” which appears on his newly released album ‘Excape.’ I think we can all agree that his outfit was on point, and it moved really well, but this things are never NOT going to be creepy.

Sigh, I could have just watched The Simpsons.’

Billboard Music Awards 2013, Full Winners List And Best Ball-Busting Performances – PRINCE, Macklemore, Miguel, Bruno, Taylor…

The 2013 Billboard Music Awards weren’t as bad as I thought they would be. Even before the show disappeared for a couple of years, it was always a bit of a second tier awards show. Sunday night the show delivered, if only because of a handful of performances and appearances.

There were the usual suspects, Taylor Swift and her stiff dancing, Nicki Minaj and her fake butt, but the night belonged to two legends, and a girl who unfortunately became the talk of the internet after a rock star move gone wrong.  Tracy Morgan was the host, and he was ok, I mean all he had to do was change jackets and read cue cards.

Our dear Bruno Mars kicked off the show with “Treasure” in true Las Vegas style.

Jennifer Lopez did “Live It Up” which is a terrible song, but she still puts on a great show. Props to her for being forty-friggin-two and wearing that outfit, which she also sports in the video.

Though we are all going through a bit of Pitbull fatigue, he took to the stage to perform “Feel This Moment” with Christina Aguilera and capped off the performance with a guest appearance by Morten Harket of A-Ha singing the classic “Take On Me,” which Pitbull’s song samples. It was a cute moment and we couldn’t help but sing along.

My only complaint, and one that Kid Rock would echo later while presenting, is that Xtina was singing to a backing track. She certainly didn’t need it, but somehow it was louder than her. I don’t know what’s going on, but I don’t like this trend of damn good singers relying on, whether they want to or not, pre-recorded vocals. What is happening to our divas?!!

Will.i.Am would perform “#ThatPower” with Justin Bieber, but more importantly handed Madonna some strange award for touring. Madge strutted on stage wearing practically nothing below the waist. She removed her “pretentious sunglasses‘ before giving her speech. I’d like to imagine Madonna and Prince backstage comparing squat techniques or something.

Someone who forgot remove their pretentious sunglasses was Bieber, who had a solo performance with “Take You.” But it was later when he would accept the “Top Social Artist” award, which isn’t even a real thing but whatever, he got booed by the audience. He got defensive, naturally, and told the crowd,

I’m 19 years old. I think I’m doing a pretty good job. Basically from my heart I really just want to say it really should be about to music. It should be about the craft that I’m making. This is not a gimmick and I’m an artist and I should be taken seriously.”

There are so many things wrong with this statement i’m just going to move on.

Miguel has been having a stellar year and getting a lot of recognition for his performing. However, maybe he should have saved the theatrics. During “Adorn” he jumped over the crowd but just missed the stage and landed on a poor girl in the audience.

Her name is Khyati and thankfully she’s ok, but now the subject of a meme because this is the internet.

Miguel has gotten many comparisons to Prince, but The Purple One would never put his dainty balls on anyone without asking in the most polite way. Of course, Prince would close out the show, but it felt like it took forever to get to him.

The lovely and stylish Erykah Badu and Janelle Monae, who should have performed, introduced him and he got to show the kids how it’s really done. He did the funky, updated version of “Let’s Go Crazy” and a new one, “Fix Ur Life Up.” He also received the “Icon Award” which he doesn’t need, because he’s Prince, bitches.

The 2012 Billboard Awards, Full List Of Winners and Whitney Tribute

The Billboard Awards happened and for three hours nothing really happened. I’ll spare you a rant on the state of music today because whether we like it or not, LMFAO exist and we only have Berry Gordy to blame.

The group along with Adele, who was not there because he had better things to do I’m sure, took home top honors. Trophies also went to Coldplay, Lil Wayne and Lady Gaga. Once again, Taylor Swift put on her best fake shocked face as she received the award for “Woman Of The Year,” an award she knew she was getting. It was presented to her by Zooey Deschanel who didn’t ask the audience if it was raining. Hosted by Ty Burrell and Julie Bowen of Modern Family, not even halfway through the show I wondered why Billboard didn’t just leave well enough alone and let this show stay dead.

There were many performances, some good like Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson and Goodie Mob featuring a performer from Cirque Du Soleil‘s Michael Jackson The IMMORTAL World Tour show. Then there were the bad including Swift 2.0 Carly Rae Jepsen, The Wanted and Usher.

These douches.

Bruh, until you can perform to the best of your ability, whatever that is now, I need you to just sit down somewhere and leave it to the kids, like Justin Bieber.

The ever-UN-original Katy Perry

Then Katy Perry ripped off both Pink and the Smashing Pumpkins with her performance of her new single “Wide Awake.” How many effing songs does she have? I also don’t know what Stevie Wonder was dong by having Alicia Keys sing “New York” acapella.

There were a couple of quick tributes to Robin Gibb, Donna Summer and Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys, but of course everyone was looking forward to the tribute to Whitney Houston.

Whoopi Goldberg introduced John Legend and Jordin Sparks who paid tribute to the late songstress with her songs “The Greatest Love Of All‘ and “I Will Always Love You.” The latter has been included in every tribute since she died and I was hoping for something else, but Jordin did a pretty good job with it.

Bobbi Kristina

Whitney’s daughter Bobbi Kristina and sister-in-law Pat Houston accepted the “Millennium Award” on her behalf.

Lest we forget to mention, Miley Cyrus wore a white tuxedo.  Minus the pants and shirt. But she did wear what looked to be a boob chain of sorts.

Miley in Jean Paul Gaultier

The thing is, Miley actually looks pretty hot…for a 19 year old going on 35, don’t you think?
