Now listen. I love Victoria BeckhamPosh Spice* more than I care to admit, but I can’t with The Spice Girls “performing” during the Closing Ceremonies for the 2012 London Olympics this Sunday evening. These girls, birds, chicks, women loathe each other and everyone knows it. So much so, that they are all going to be paraded around in separate PopeSpice Mobiles rather than interact with one another during this unnecessary reunion. Okay, they are actually Ford taxi’s, but you get my drift.
*This just might be the last time we refer to Victoria Beckham as “Posh Spice”. (But probably not.)
The Spice Girls are back together and 12-year old me is rejoicing. The ladies gathered in London on Tuesday to celebrate the launch of a musical based on their music, ‘Viva Forever!.’ The last time they were together was for a reunion world tour in 2007 and 2008. The event was held at the same London hotel the girls shot their first video for ‘Wannabe‘.
The show, which opens later this year, is described as “the story of a beautiful, talented girl and her best friends who get swept up in the obsession of today’s TV celebrity culture.” The musical “charts her journey into the world of overnight fame and its impact on her relationships with her mother and the friends she thought she’d have forever.”
It’s being produced by Judy Craymer, who produced the hit musical Mamma Mia!. The book will be written by Jennifer Saunders, creator of the BBC sitcom ‘Absolutely Fabulous.’ Saunders once spoofed them with a band called the Sugar Lumps, but wants the show to capture “the joy that they brought, their energy and their positivity.” It will be directed by Paul Garrington.
A lot has changed for the Girls since they gained world wide fame for wanting to zig-a-zig-ah back in the 90s. For one, they’re all moms, but all these years later and Victoria still doesn’t want to smile. She did say that she was excited to be “introducing a whole new generation to ‘Girl Power.” Geri “Ginger” Halliwell famously left the group in 1998, but said of her bandmates, “individually and collectively, they’re really lovely.”
“She’s only saying that because she left!” joked Melanie “Sporty” Chisholm.
