It’s the end of a crotchety era. Regis Philbin announced this morning on ‘Live! With Regis and Kelly‘ that this would be his last year on the long running morning show. Regis told his audience,
“This will be my last year on the show. It’s been a long time, it’s been 28 years since I’ve been here. And it was the biggest thrill of my life. There is a time that everything must come to an end for certain people on camera, especially certain old people.”
No exact date was given but, Philbin could step down sometime this summer.
The audience was audibly shocked and even Kelly Ripa looked surprised.
“I think I can only speak for America and all of us here when I say it has been a pleasure and a privilege and a dream come true,” Ripa said. “And I wish I could do something to change your mind.”
The 79-year old has been hosting Live! since 1987, which he originally co-hosted with Kathie Lee Gifford. Live! will continue with Kelly Ripa who will get a new co-host. (No one can replace Anderson Cooper! Too bad he already has a new show coming up.) Well, I guess Kelly’s husband, Mark Consuelos is free.
Larry King expressed interest in possibly filling his seat. “I would get a kick out of that, I would do that in a minute.” Larry, just sit down somewhere…you couldn’t remember, let alone pronounce your guest’s name–something you have in common with Reege. (Sorry, it had to be said.)
I’m definitely going to miss them dressing up for Halloween. *tear*
