BET Premieres Two New Series

BET premiered two new series on Tuesday night, ‘Real Husbands of Hollywood’ and ‘Second Generation Wayans,’ which both take a fake look at the real lives of some male celebrities. The network has been trying to change its image by introducing more original shows, and I found these to be some interesting additions to their lineup.

Created by it’s star, comedian Kevin Hart, ‘RHOH’ got it’s start as a skit during the 2011 BET Awards. Billed as the “fakest reality show on tv,” Kevin and his famous frenemies, which include Boris Kodjoe and Robin Thicke, play poker, avoid their wives and s*** talk each other about their careers. It’s all in good fun though, and although I thought there was too much of him, Hart makes a good center for the show. Making himself the butt of jokes and even getting beat up by a kid, he hilariously illustrates being the pains of being a wannabe baller. It’s a great parody of  Bravo‘s ‘Housewives’ franchise, where women fight over nothing and think every little thing they do is special. Kevin is the show’s main narcissist, the Countess LuAnn if you will, but his interactions and run-ins with the likes of Nick Cannon and rapper Nelly make it enjoyable. The ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ type skewed version of reality works because it’s a look at what it might be like to just be known as Mariah Carey‘s husband, or the guy that sang “Hot In Herre.”

Mr. Hart also made an appearance on ‘Second Generation Wayans‘ as himself. The show chronicles the mishaps of a couple of Wayans that you’ve probably never heard of, and that’s their problem. While both Craig and Damien Dante Wayans have worked behind the scenes on a number of projects for their family, it’s been hard for them to break out on their own. They have the name recognition, and talent, but they can’t get their foot in the door, even after they get some advice from uncle Marlon. The irony here is that they have this show on a network, but you have to wonder if they struggled the same way their characters did. Tatyana M. Ali, best known for playing Ashley Banks on ‘Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,’ plays their assistant Maya and George O. Gore II, an honorary Wayans who played Damon‘s son Junior on ‘My Wife and Kids,’ moves away from acting to become a producer. One standout scene featured singer LeToya Luckett collecting her son from Craig, who is obviously afraid of her. It’s a bit like a black ‘Entourage’ but the guys are better looking.

So I think BET has two solid shows on their hands. They each take a look at what it’s like to be black actor in Hollywood these days. Even if you have the name, the looks and the talent, it’s hard but you do what you gotta do to succeed. As fake as they might be, the the shows deliver some real laughs.
