The world has a new Spider-Man, meet Andrew Garfield. Who, you ask? Exactly. Not surprising that they went with an unknown, but surprisingly, he’s British. You may have seen him in Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus or Boy A, in which his role earned him a BAFTA award for Best Actor in 2008. He’ll also be costarring in the Facebook movie (why?!) Social Network with Jesse Eisenberg and Justin Timberlake. There were a number of names on the shortlist for the role of Spidey including Anton Yelchin from Star Trek, Logan Lerman from Percy Jackson and The Olympians and most recently Josh Hutcherson.
I love how this was all supposed to be such a big deal. I don’t understand why they’re doing a reboot of a movie series that started what, 8 years ago? I thought Tobey Maguire was a great mix of shy geek and cunning hero, perfect Spider-Man. It would have been nice to see this go in a different direction. There was a Twitter campaign trying to get Community actor and comedian Donald Glover considered for the part with his costar Alison Brie, who also plays Trudy Campbell on Mad Men, as Mary Jane.
Oh well, hopefully Andrew will look good in that skintight suit.
