For their December issue, GQ honored the men they thought shaped 2013, or at least parts of it. Photographer Sebastian Kim shot Justin Timberlake the “The Hastag of the Year” seriously, Kendrick Lamar the “Rapper of The Year“. Matthew McConaughey, “Leading Man of The Year,” and Will Ferrell, “Funnyman of The Year“ for profiles. The fifth cover went to the late James Gandolfini, honored by his best and closest friends.
Depending on who you ask, JT had the comeback of the year, releasing not one but two records, ‘The 20/20 Experience’ and co-starring in ‘Runner Runner.’ However, it was the reviews he received for both that made him question himself. He tells Amy Wallace that he felt “like a bunch of people just took a s*** on my face” when Variety ran an article titled “Why Justin Timberlake Should Stop Acting” and Billboard gave less than favorable critiques of the second part of ‘20/20.’
This face,” he says, circling it with one finger.
“This recognizable face that you work so hard to get—not because you want the recognition but because you know you’re made to do it.” This face, he’s saying, comes at a cost. “The movie didn’t do well at the box office, so I should quit? Hold on a second. If I was somebody else, you wouldn’t have said that. I have the number one album this week, and I shouldn’t have released it? Come on, man. You sound like a dickhead…. It just shocked me because, like, you’re trade magazines. None of your opinions count. And by the way, none of you can do it.”
Ugh, JT, bruh. That wasn’t just the magazine’s opinions, that was a lot of people’s opinions.
But moving on…Kendrick Lamar also had a banner year, full of praise, made even bigger when he dropped arguably the rap verse of the year on Big Sean‘s “Control.” That, and declaring himself “The King of New York” made a lot of people mad, but gave the rap game the fire it needed, even if it only lasted a couple of weeks. If you want to know what’s going on between him and Drake, Lamar says things are “cool” but it would “okay” if they weren’t. Mmmhmm…
You can read the rest of JT, Matthew and Kendrick‘s features now. The magazines hit newsstands on November 19.
