We get our first look at Whitney Houston‘s last film role in ‘Sparkle,‘ a remake of the 1976 movie about a girl group from from Harlem, NY. Houston plays the loving, but strict mother to the group’s three singers played by Jordin Sparks, Tika Sumpter and Carmen Ejogo.

Derek Luke also co-stars as Sparks’ love interest, Stix, comedian Mike Epps as the girls’ manager Satin and a James Brown-ish Cee Lo Green as singer, Black. There’s no doubting Jordin’s singing abilities, with this being her first feature film, fingers crossed she does well in the film.
Of course everyone will be paying attention to Whitney’s performance. Although her voice before her death wasn’t as strong as it was during the height of her fame, she still sounded great and gives what I’m sure will be an emotional performance.
‘Sparkle’ will be in theaters August 17.
