Song of the Day – ‘Poison and Wine’, The Civil Wars

Joy Williams and John Paul White aka The Civil Wars

I don’t think I took one single breath upon hearing this song, Poison and Wine by The Civil Wars for the first time.  Actually, I think I’m breathless every time I hear it…

You only know what I want you to
I know everything you don’t want me to
Oh your mouth is poison, your mouth is wine
You think your dreams are the same as mine
Oh I don’t love you but I always will
Oh I don’t love you but I always will
Oh I don’t love you but I always will
I always will

I wish you’d hold me when I turn my back
The less I give the more I get back
Oh your hands can heal, your hands can bruise
I don’t have a choice, but I still choose you

Oh I don’t love you but I always will
I always will

For me, it’s not a literal “sad love song” about one’s partner.  That’s the beauty of personal interpretation, I suppose.  But it doesn’t make this heartbreaking song any less painful for me to hear.  Harsh words, loving words, lies, anger, distance–these are all part of  the deepest of friendships and familial relationships.

My heart hurts and I can’t breathe.

I don’t love you, but I always will…
