Gene Hackman might have retired from acting to enjoy a leisurely life of writing and painting, but that doesn’t mean he’s going to entertain any insults to his wife.
According to CBS News, the 82-year old and two time Oscar winner was leaving a Santa Fe restaurant with this wife when they were approached by a homeless man. On previous occasions the couple had given the individual money and food but this time heated words were exchanged. (According to TMZ, the man called Hackman’s wife a “c–t.”) The situation escalated to a physical encounter and Hackman slapped the man.
After an investigation Santa Fe police have declined to press charges, stating:
“…it was a simple battery case and it appears Mr. Hackman was acting in self-defense because he was concerned for his safety.”
Thankfully, my own 82-year old Grandfather has not been called upon to defend my Grandmother’s honor recently.
Hackman has not appeared onscreen since 2004’s Welcome to Moooseport, but will narrate the upcoming Martin Scorsese film The Wolf of Wall Street, starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
