Ray Manzarek, Founding Member of The Doors Dead At 74

Ray Manzarek, one of the co-founders of The Doors has passed away from bile duct cancer at the age of 74.

via TMZ and Manzarek’s Facebook Page:

Ray Manzarek — who co-founded “The Doors” with Jim Morrison in 1965 and played keyboard — has died, this according to the band’s official Facebook page.  Manzarek was 74.

According to the website, Manzarek passed away today at the RoMed Clinic in Rosenheim, Germany after a lengthy battle with bile duct cancer.  At the time of his death, Ray was surrounded by his wife Dorothy and his brothers Rick and James.

Along with Jim … Ray and The Doors churned out some of the most iconic rock songs in history — including, “L.A. Woman,” “Break On Through to the Other Side,” “The End,” “Hello, I Love You,” and “Light My Fire.”

Doors’ guitarist Robby Krieger released a statement saying, “I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of my friend and bandmate Ray Manzarek.” He added, “I’m just glad to have been able to have played Doors songs with him for the last decade. Ray was a huge part of my life and I will always miss him.

According to the band’s official Facebook page … Ray’s family has asked that in lieu of flowers, fans should make an in memoriam donation in Ray’s name to Standup2cancer.org.

In 1993, Pearl Jam’s  Eddie Vedder inducted The Doors into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and joined the band on “Break On Through to the Other Side”.  I was raised on The Doors and The Beatles, but I did love seeing one of our Seattle icons take the mic with the band, even though I know some of you may not agree.  If you watch this, you’ll see how much Ray was enjoying himself during the performance.

Rest in peace, Ray.

Oh, and fuck cancer.

Chrissy Amphlett – Dead at 53

Wow.  Even knowing about Chrissy Amphlett’s struggles with both breast cancer (2010) and MS (2007) over  the majority of the early 90s, the iconic song I Touch Myself hearing the news of her passing today at age 53 is still incredibly sad and shocking.

Amphlett, who grew up in Geelong, Victoria, lived in New York with her husband, former Divinyls drummer Charley Drayton.

The cause of her death is not yet clear.

In 2010 she revealed she had breast cancer but in early 2011 she said she was in remission.

In 2007 the charismatic frontwoman also revealed a battle against multiple sclerosis.

In March, she shared an insight into her health troubles via her official Facebook page.

Unfortunately the last 18 months have been a real challenge for me having breast cancer and MS and all the new places that will take you,” she wrote.

You become sadly a patient in a world of waiting rooms, waiting sometimes hours for a result or an appointment.

“You spend a lot time in cold machines… hospital beds, on your knees praying for miracles, operating rooms, tests after tests, looking at healthy people skip down the street like you once did and you took it all for granted and now wish you could do that.

I have not stopped singing throughout all this in my dreams and to be once again performing and doing what I love to do.”

The Divinyls’ biggest hit was a must-see on MTV and VH1, and a must blast in the car classic and did indeed reach number one in Australia and was also a success in the U.K. and in the U.S.

You will be missed, you beautiful red-headed vixen. Rest peacefully, Chrissy…

Cancer Sucks. But These Women Are HEROES.

Kristin (L) and Hilary (R) – Beautiful Friends

My dear friend and colleague,  Hilary Sherpherd  has followed through with the promise she made several weeks ago and has shaved her head in honor of  someone very special to her.  I’ll let  Hilary tell the story in her words. First…the video of the process!  How perfect is it that David Bowie’s “CHANGES” was playing while Kristin did the honors of shaving Hilary’s head?

“On September 17, 2012, my friend Kristin, a 28-year-old wife and mother of two young daughters, was diagnosed with breast cancer. Upon hearing this news, there was only one thing I could think of doing… shaving my head! I don’t have money to help with medical bills, and I don’t live close enough to her to help with dinner or childcare, but I knew in my heart that I HAD to do something. So, I decided to shave my head.

All this hair was donated to Locks of Love by Hilary!

Head shaving doesn’t cost money, and it’s totally not permanent – you know, like losing a boob to cancer is; it was the least I could do.

Ch-ch-ch-ch-CHANGES!!

People are telling me I’m awesome, and how great of a friend I am, but all I really see is a need for love to be filled. I’m super-duper compassionate (a trait I learned from my parents and am extremely proud of), and I have tons of empathy for the struggles of my fellow human.

However, I am not the type of person to sit on a couch and cry. Life sucks – deal with it. Of course I have feelings, and I long for my friends and family to only know happiness. But when it comes to distress, I’m not always sure what to do; my natural reaction is to shake my fist at the Gods and curse the Universe. My shaved head is the result of such a reaction.

 F*CK CANCER!!!”
Hilary had most of Facebook  in tears of jubilation last night as we got a minute-by-minute update, and it was roundly decided that she was a badass for honoring Kristin this way.  She donated THIRTEEN INCHES of hair to Locks of Love--just an added act of  true beauty.

Kristin is a hero for coming out of the black hole of cancer like a true champion.  As such, our Song of the Day is David Bowie’s ‘HEROES’.
I love you, Becky.  I’m honored to be your friend.
