‘The Evil Dead’ isn’t as much of a cult favorite as it’s sequels, but Sam Raimi‘s first film kicked off a new breed of indie horror that is still influencing movies today. Both Raimi and the original trilogy’s star Bruce Campbell serve as producers for the remake, helmed by director Fede Alvarez. ‘Evil Dead’ gets a sleek and gory update but still follows the same story of an unlucky bunch of friends terrorized by demons while staying at an isolated cabin.
‘Suburgatory”s Jane Levy stars as Mia, replacing Ash Williams as the main character. The movie also features Lou Taylor Pucci, Lou Taylor Pucci, Jessica Lucas and Elizabeth Blackmore as her doomed friends. Alvarez wrote the script with Rodo Sayagues then Diablo Cody was brought in to help revise it and make the dialogue sound “younger.” I’m already cringing at the thought of the characters arguing about who liked some crappy band first before one of them gets raped by a tree.
Oh yeah, the tree rape is still in there. If you dare, check out the NSFW trailer. ‘Evil Dead‘ will be in theaters April 5, 2013.
