Joan Smalls Covers Elle’s January Issue, Will Supermodels Return To Magazines?

Photos: Elle

The worlds #1 ranked model, Joan Smalls, is already having a great 2014 and the year hasn’t even started yet. Smalls is the cover girl for Vogue GermanyElle France and the US version of Elle for their January issues. She is one of the few models the magazine has featured in the past couple of years. While this is another plus for her career, what could it mean for her fellow supes?

With the exception of Kate Upton, and occasionally someone like Heidi Klum, models have been mostly absent from the covers of American fashion magazines. The shift started in the early 2000s when actresses took over, and then singers and personalities and now even the First Lady. With Smalls on the cover of a major US magazine, perhaps that signals the return of the supermodel to the newsstands. If so, I welcome it, if only to break up the monotony of the same bunch of actresses, and Beyonce and Rihanna, that get rotated onto these things. Not only is this a big deal for Joan, this is also the first time that photographer Michael Thompson has shot for the mag. I hope this isn’t his last.

The 25 year-old has been raking in the dough, and snatching campaigns for H&MGucci and Estee Lauder. She’s also walked in some of the biggest fashion shows, including DiorChanelTom Ford and even the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. She’s a favorite of Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci, whom she wears on the cover and naturally, like every other model, she wants to move into acting to “entertain people on a different level.” Despite all of her successes, Smalls is still aware of the lack of diversity in fashion, especially on the runway. She says that one of the issues is that people hide behind the word “aesthetic” to explain why designers will have mostly, if not all, white models in their shows.

“They say, ‘Well, it’s just that designer’s aesthetic.’ But when you see 18 seasons in a row and not one single model outside a certain skin color…? There are people in the industry who are advocates, who support diversity. And there are people who do not. I don’t get it. Beauty is universal. These doors have to open.”

As those doors open wider, I hope we see more of Joan and her peers not just inside magazines but covering them. You can see the rest of her editorial and read the rest of the interview when the issue hits newsstands on December 17.

Magazine Round-Up! The August 2013 Issues

Despite who one magazine chose to put on their latest covers, the August issues were pretty good this year, and a great pre-cursor to the big September issues.

The biggest of them all is usually Vogue, who has Claire Danes as their coverstar for August. Photographed by Annie Leibovitz, she is joined by her ‘Homeland’ co-star Damien Lewis in a slick, spy themed editorial. This is the first time that Danes have covered the mag since 1998.

Supermodel Kate Moss lands the cover of Allure, shot by Mario Testino. In the mag Moss talks about the anorexia rumors that plagued her during the start of her career, saying “The heroin, I was like, ‘Oh, it’s ridiculous. I know I don’t do heroin. Just because I wear a bit of black eyeliner that’s smudged….’ But the anorexic thing was a lot more upsetting, to be held responsible for somebody’s illness. I wasn’t anorexic.” On a lighter note, she reveals that her 10-year old daughter Lila loves the movie ‘The Devil Wears Prada,’ and regularly quotes Emily Blunt‘s assistant character, “Hello, Miranda Priestly’s office. Can you hold? Patrick Demarchelier on the line!‘”

Breaking Bad’ star Bryan Cranston looks sharp among some destroyed cars in L.A. for GQ, shot by Nathaniel Goldberg. Though his hit AMC drama will be coming to an end after it’s 6th season, which starts on August 11, Cranston will be moving on to even bigger things, like a remake of ‘Godzilla’ set to be released next year.

Also, can you believe this guy is 57?

Another 50-something and still fine man, The Purple One was photographed by the team of Inez van Lamsweerde & Ninoodh Matadin for V magazine’s Fall preview issue.  His new band, 3rdEyeGirl, are also featured in the spread, where they are all decked out in Balmain and Saint Laurent, though Prince wears his own clothes plus a little Jason Wu.

Amanda Seyfried, who stars in the upcoming ‘Lovelace,’ talks sex for ELLE by Carter Smith.

Nicki Minaj gets glam for Marie Claire.

The always cheeky Sophia Vergara for Harper’s Bazaar, by who else but Creepy Uncle Terry Richardson. (Ew.)

Rosie Huntington-Whitely and the uh, boys, of One Direction for Glamour. Didn’t this magazine used to be for grown women? Where’s her man, Jason Statham?

Denzel Washington and his wife Pauletta for Ebony. Curiously, some cheating rumors came out the day after the release of this issue. But they’re still a beautiful couple.

Britney Spears In Elle’s October Issue

Cover ONE!

Britney Spears gets two covers for the upcoming October issue of Elle magazine.

Cover 2!

In the mag she talks about her relationship with fiance Jason Traywick, being a judge on ‘X Factor‘ and being a mom.

Jason and Brit-Brit

On her relationship with Jason Trawick:
Jason Trawick tells ELLE Britney made the first move in their relationship: “It was kind of one of those things where she moved, like, turned around, so we were face-to-face, and then-” Britney’s response? “Okay, that’s enough information, sweetie. It was sweet, just say that.”

On her laid-back style:
“I love my jeans and my sweats-I’m really just a tomboy at heart. So it’s really hard for me to be like Kim Kardashian and be makeup-and hair-ready every time I  go out of my house. I’m not a believer in that, you know? On the other hand, when you do wear those sweats, you’re like, Oh God, I should step it up a notch.”

On dealing with paparazzi scrutiny:
“I guess I’ve been under the microscope so long that I don’t even pay attention to the nonsense anymore. I gave up getting upset about things people make up about me a long time ago.”
