When we left off last season of Modern Family, Gloria (Sofia Vergara) had just discovered her pregnancy, immediately after Cam and Mitch (Eric Stonestreet and Jesse Tyler Ferguson) found out that their adoption of a baby boy had fell through.
In the premiere, Gloria struggles to figure out a way to break the news to Jay (Ed O’Neill) on his 65th birthday, while Cam and Mitch deal with telling a petulant Lily (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons) that she isn’t going to be getting a baby brother after all. The toddler takes the news well, but immediately adopts the phrase “If I can’t have a brother, then I want..” to try and convince the family to adopt a kitten instead.
Meanwhile, a visibly hungover and unapologetic Haley reflects on her prom and tries to convince Phil and Claire (Ty Burrell and Julie Bowen) to let her freeloading boyfriend, Dylan (Reid Ewing), move in with them.
When Manny (Rico Rodriquez) gets worked up at the prospect of no longer being an only child and spills the beans to Jay about the baby, Gloria reacts dramatically, telling him that she will raise the child herself if he isn’t up for the challenge, but ultimately, Jay says that he is thrilled and ends up being overjoyed with the news.
While I couldn’t help but feel like the laughs are dwindling slightly this season, the show sticks to it’s regular half-hour morsel of sweetness and simplicity. Although predictable, you’re inevitably going to walk away every week with a smile.
