Oprah has been on a roll lately with her ‘Next Chapter’ series. Just last week there was the explosive interview with Lance Armstrong where he continued to lie through his teeth, now she sits down with Drew Barrymore to discuss the still strained relationship with her mother and how she wants to be a better parent to her daughter Olive.
When Barrymore married art consultant Will Kopelman last June, her mother Jaid was not in attendance. “She was not there, which was very hard. We both discussed it and thought it would be best (for her not to come),” she said. Drew emancipated herself from her mother when she was 17, and has had very little contact with her since then.
Barrymore was known for being a “wild child,” flashing her breasts to David Letterman on television and having some very public relationships and breakups. Oprah asked, “What are you going to tell her about who you once were? What will be the context for those stories?” Drew replied, “I will absolutely instill in her that you cannot be ashamed of the journey that it took to get where you are, if you are proud of yourself.”
Not only that, Drew plans to be a hands on mom, can you imagine her running the PTA? “I will be there at 3pm in the school line waiting to pick her up, she says adding, I think the world offers so many wonderful varieties of obstacles, but that shouldn’t be one for kids… the worry that ‘my parent won’t be there’.”
You can watch the whole interview Sunday night on OWN at 9 p.m. est
