Donna Summer, Queen of Disco Dies of Cancer at 63

Donna Summer, Dead at 63

This is shocking.  Donna Summer, the Queen of Disco has died at age 63, reportedly of cancer. I’m a little stunned sitting here with my laptop.  My senior year in high school is flashing before my eyes with the pulsing beats and perfect sound of Donna Summer’s soprano filling my heart.   Donna’s family released the following statement:

“While we grieve her passing, we are at peace celebrating her extraordinary life and her continued legacy,” the statement reads. “Words truly can’t express how much we appreciate your prayers and love for our family at this sensitive time.”

Back in the late 70’s, we saw absolutely nothing wrong with wearing  “disco dresses” and Candies 4″  black patent leather mules to class. I think back now and wonder how we managed getting from class to class in those shoes in the sprawling outdoor campus of my southern California high school–but we did.

Studio 54 in all its glory in the late 1970's

Since we weren’t old enough to go to discos yet, we lived vicariously through the photographic coverage of the decadence of Studio 54.  “Last Dance” was a favorite of mine.  Miss Summer’s soft, tender cooing which gathered momentum to spin us into orbit…even though I had pretend I was hanging out and dancing with Andy, Mick, Bianca, Michael and Halston, et al,  in the Studio 54 in my vivid imagination.

Donna Summer is survived by her husband, singer and producer Bruce Sudano; their daughters, Brooklyn and Amanda; and Summer’s daughter, Mimi, from a previous marriage.

Rest peacefully, Donna.
