Just how much did Natalie Portman dance in “Black Swan”?

It's MEEEE, Mommy!

Timed perfectly with the release of ‘Black Swan‘ on dvd (I’m just sayin’),  a dance double for Natalie Portman is saying that the Academy Award-winning actress only did 5% of her own dancing for the film. Ballerina Sara Lane told Entertainment Weekly that producers told her not to talk publicly about her during award’s season. This came after the choreographer, and Portman’s fiance, Benjamin Millepied told the L.A. Times that his future wifey did 85% of the dancing for the movie.

Yeah, this move was super hard, you guys.

Director Darren Aronofsky released a statement through Fox Searchlight studios:

“Here is the reality. I had my editor count shots. There are 139 dance shots in the film. 111 are Natalie Portman untouched. 28 are her dance double Sarah Lane. If you do the math that’s 80% Natalie Portman. What about duration? The shots that feature the double are wide shots and rarely play for longer than one second. There are two complicated longer dance sequences that we used face replacement.Even so, if we were judging by time over 90% would be Natalie Portman.

And to be clear, Natalie did dance on pointe in pointe shoes. If you look at the final shot of the opening prologue, which lasts 85 seconds, and was danced completely by Natalie, she exits the scene on pointe. That is completely her without any digital magic. I am responding to this to put this to rest and to defend my actor. Natalie sweated long and hard to deliver a great physical and emotional performance.  And I don’t want anyone to think that’s not her they are watching. It is.”

"Whaaaa?"

So here’s what I think happened, the actual ballerina filmed numerous scenes of her dancing which were then cut or edited to make it look like Natalie did all the dancing in her scenes. I’m sure she practiced and trained long and hard, but it takes years to learn how to do what Nina in the movie was supposed to be good at. Of course now Sara Lane looks like a butthurt bitch. Portman’s co-star Mila Kunis defended her saying, “Natalie danced her ass off. I think it’s unfortunate that this is coming out and taking attention away from (the praise) Natalie deserved and got.”

You know who really lost all that weight, thinned his hair and acted crazy, Christian Bale, that’s who!  As our friend Roger Ebert stated though, Natalie won her Oscar for acting, not dancing.

Nina's full transformation...

I know.  Enough with all the swooning over Black Swan, right?  No.  Not gonna happen.

I saw Black Swan again last week and noticed more details, which always happens when we see a film more than once, right?  I came across a cool/fan-girl/geeky video which shows a bit of the CGI involved in some of  Natalie Portman’s character,  Nina’s “transformation”, as well a few other cool scenes.

I haven’t heard from too many of you about this film.  What are your thoughts in general?  (Meaning, how much did you LOVE Black Swan?)

Mila Kunis and MacCaulay Culkin SPLIT

"Mac" and Mila, attending Michael Jackson's funeral...nice side-eye, Mila.

Well, durrrr. After seven years, Mila and “Mac” have split up. Mila must have realized that are bigger former child-stars who were thisclose with Michael Jackson in the sea.  They had been together for seven years!  I KNOW, right??  Super under the radar…except with Russell Brand:

Ever since I saw Russell make fun of “Mac”, I have to do this entire bit every time I hear his name–which probably won’t be all that often now that he isn’t with the gorgeous Black Swan actress.
