The folks at Starz have sent out a call of “Pirates Wanted” to promote their new show ‘Black Sails’. Well, why didn’t you say so sooner?! The second episode aired tonight and, to be completely honest, they had me at hello; tonight was merely a formality, a consummation of the great love between me and this show. If you love pirates and pirate lore, as I do, ‘Black Sails’ is the show we’ve long awaited. It’s a raw and unapologetic look at what life might have been like in the pirate haven of Nassau, Bahamas, where politics was more key than most people think. BRING OUT THE RUM!
Our dangerously sexy, ruthless, and cunning cast of characters include Captain Flint (Toby Stephens), John Silver (Luke Arnold), Eleanor Guthrie (Hannah New), Max (Jessica Parker Kennedy), and Captain Vane (Zach McGowan), among many others. From the very outset, we’re not only given typical serial setup, but also thrown straight into Capt. Flint’s desperate search for what is, for all intents and purposes, his holy grail. A Spanish Galleon carrying a treasure grand enough to make him a pirate king to his “princes of the New World”. *Hey, I don’t need convincing so, sign me up! I already have all the appropriate tattoos!* Willing to assist him is the always business-minded Eleanor, though the vicious ambition of her ex, Capt. Vane, sees them existing under a figurative sword of Damocles. Seriously. Vane and his merry men, Rackham (Toby Schmitz) and Anne Bonny (Clara Paget), are…not to be trifled with. And it’s all a race to possess the galleon’s sailing schedule that John Silver managed to squirrel away. The long and short of it is, even if you’re daft enough to NOT be into pirates, Starz has created genuinely gripping storytelling with ‘Black Sails’. If you DO dig pirates then, hello, friend!
As I am wont to do, I live-tweeted tonight’s episode entitled “II”, in which Flint gets a clue, Vane might be redeemable, Max gets the shaft, and Eleanor’s right hand man, Mr. Scott (Hakeem Kae-Kazim), is having none of her shit. Whoever runs the official ‘Black Sails’ twitter liked it enough to give me a follow so, who are you to argue with that?!
