They (the collective  “THEY”) call the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute’s Gala “The Oscars of Fashion”  (I thought the Oscars were “The Oscars of Fashion”, but whatevs.)  This year’s Gala is honoring the late, and so very gifted, Alexander McQueen, with a tribute called Savage Beauty.

“Sarah Burton, McQueen’s creative director and his right-hand woman for 14 years, was clearly emotional at the event—and understandably so. Not only was the venue the site of McQueen’s first post-graduate show, but the handful of pieces on display, including his calf-hair horned jacket and a gilded feather jacket [above], reminded everyone why McQueen was such a national treasure. SamCam gave McQueen his due gravity introducing the event:

“We are so happy that one of America’s great institutions is supporting one of the U.K.’s most deeply talented designers, Alexander McQueen,” she said from the podium. Bolton, for his part, agreed wholeheartedly; McQueen, he said, was an “easy sell” for the theme, especially given the late designer’s tremendous body of work.”

Of course, we now know that Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen was the designer of the wedding dress of the century over the weekend .  Take a look at a few of the gorgeous gowns spotted on the Met Gala’s Red Carpet this evening…

Kate Hudson (Man, I'm sick of her pie-hole.)
Kristen Stewart. It's so hard being HER.
Taylor Swift
JLo in Gucci
The ever-icy Anna Wintour in Chanel

Janelle Monae looking FANTASTIC in Chanel.

Madonna looks quite regal; Taylor Swift is trying too hard, as is Jennifer Lopez–but she’s entitled.  Salma Hayek is absolutely a vision.  Love the fact that she wore a McQueen gown.    I really do love Janelle Monae’s Chanel ensemble.  It’s elegant, modern and true to her trade-mark look.

If I find anyone else who looks interesting, I’ll keep you updated.

The young, but already legendary British designer, Alexander (Lee) McQueen was found dead in his upscale London apartment early Thursday morning.  His mother, Joyce had passed away just days ago, and it’s said McQueen was distraught over the loss.

McQueen wrote the following on his Twitter account:

via Twitter:

“I’m letting my followers know the my mother passed away yesterday if it she had not me nor would you RIPmumxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. but life must go on.”

McQueen's message on his Twitter account.

Alexander McQueen’s death is an apparent suicide.

  • On behalf of Lee McQueen’s family, Alexander McQueen today announces the tragic news that Lee McQueen, the founder and designer of the Alexander McQueen brand has been found dead at his home. At this stage it is inappropriate to comment on this tragic news beyond saying that we are devastated and are sharing a sense of shock and grief with Lee’s family.
  • Lee’s family has asked for privacy in order to come to terms with this terrible news and we hope the media will respect this.
Some of Alexander McQueen’s designs have included Sandra Bullock’s striking blue satin gown at the SAG Awards just weeks ago:

A few of my favorite Alexander McQueen looks from his brilliant 2009 Ready-to-Wear Collection. I adore houndstooth and his take on it was tremendous and fresh.

Such sad news for the world of fashion.
