It’s going to be a hard knock Christmas this year. Based on the 1976 musical of the same name, ‘Annie‘ gets an update with ‘Beasts of The Southern Wild‘ star, and Oscar nominee, Quvenzhane Wallis playing the precocious and lovable orphan. The story is pretty much the same, with Annie being one of the girls terrorized by the scheming Miss Hannigan, played by Cameron Diaz, and she finds herself being used for publicity by Will Stacks, Jamie Foxx, a wealthy politician in need of a better image, and love.
The movie was produced by Will Smith, whose daughter Willow was originally supposed to star but later dropped out of film, and Jay Z. Cover versions of songs from the original Broadway musical are used, as well as Jay’s songs. I’m actually surprised we didn’t hear ‘Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)‘ in the trailer. The film also stars Rose Byrne as Stack’s assistant Grace Farrell, along with Bobby Cannavale, Tracie Thoms and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. I think the movie looks adorable and I can’t wait to hear more of the music.
‘Annie‘ hits theaters on December 19.
