Well of course, everyone couldn’t get engaged on Christmas–how boring! A big crop of celebs saved their engagements for New Year’s Eve, including the One and Only Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin.
The 69-year-old legendary singer is marrying her longtime beau William “Willie” Wilkerson and joked to the Associated Press that she “wasn’t pregnant.” The couple is reportedly planning a Summer wedding in Miami Beach, Florida aboard a private yacht. Her wedding dress will either be designed by Donna Karan, Valentino or Vera Wang. This will be Franklin’s third marriage. Her first was to Ted White in 1961, and actor Glenn Thurman in 1978.
Figure skater Johnny Weir (and M.A.C. spokesmodel)got married to his boyfriend Victor Voronov on Saturday. “I’m married! No more livin’ in sin!” he tweeted.
While all of the “official stuff” is done, there will be a big wedding in the Summer. Voronov, a Georgetown University law graduate later tweeted that he was “Ringing in the new year with my hubby.” Congrats to the happy couple!
Also putting a ring on is basketball player LeBron James, he popped the question longtime girlfriend Savannah Brinson at a New Year’s Eve party in South Beach. The couple were surrounded by friends, including James‘ teammates Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, and the couple’s two sons, LeBron Jr., 7, and Bryce, 4. Bosh said the proposal was sweet, but it seems he didn’t get the memo about wearing red pants.
I’ll save you the obvious joke, but days before superstar Michael Jordan proposed to his girlfriend of three years Yvette Prieto. I’m sure Jordan, 48, is going to holla pre-nup at Prieto, 32, after shelling out $168 million dollars to ex-wife Juanita after their divorce in 2006. The upside is, I bet Yvette gets to avoid the crowds and gets all of the new coveted Nike Jordans for free.
