Song Of The Day, Or Week, Or Months For Ferguson, Missouri – ‘Iron Sky’ By Paolo Nutini

Paolo Nutini
Paolo Nutini

I realize that this song may seem an odd choice for ‘Song of the Day…Week…Month, etc.”, given that it was written and sung by a Scottish lad of Italian decent, Paolo Nutini. However, please–I repeat, PLEASE listen while reading the lyrics below to “Iron Sky” and tell me this doesn’t kick you in the heart–because it WILL.

Pictures in the News: Ferguson, Missouri

Initially when I first heard “Iron Sky”, I envisioned the civil rights marches with Martin Luther King, Jr, then all of the havoc we are witnessing in Gaza, Palestine, Iraq, the whole ISIS mess…but now? All I can relate this song to is the horrific unrest in Ferguson, Missouri.

“Iron Sky”

We are proud individuals living on the city,
But the flames couldn’t go much higher.
We find God and religions to,
To paint us with salvation.
But no one,
No nobody,
Can give you the power,

To rise over love,
And over hate,
Through this iron sky,
That’s fast becoming our minds.
Over fear and into freedom.

Oh, that’s life
That’s dripping down the walls
Of a dream that cannot breathe
In this harsh reality
Mass confusion spoon fed to the blind
Serves now to define our cold society

From which we’ll rise over love,
Over hate,
From this iron sky,
That’s fast becoming our minds.
Over fear and into freedom.

You just got to hold on!
You just got to hold on!

Ohhh ohhhh oh oh

(To those who can hear me, I say, do not despair.
The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed,
the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress.
The hate of men will pass, and dictators die,
and the power they took from the people will return to the people.
And so long as men die, liberty will never perish.
Don’t give yourselves to these unnatural men –
machine men with machine minds and machine hearts!
You are not machines, you are not cattle, you are men!
You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful,
to make this life a wonderful adventure
Let us use that power!
Let us all unite!)*

And we’ll rise over love,
And over hate,
Through this iron sky,
That’s fast becoming our minds
Over fear,
Into freedom.
Into freedom!

From which we’ll rise over love,
And over hate,
Through this iron sky,
That’s fast becoming our minds.
Over fear and into freedom.
Freedom!

Oh!
Rain on me!
Rain on me!
Rain on me!

I’ve been a huge fan of Paolo’s for nearly 10 years, but never has a song of his had the kind of power and impact on my psyche and my heart like this one has done. I can’t get it out of my head. Please do share this post if the lyrics touch you.

Prayers for Justice in Ferguson.

Nickelodeon Kids Pick The President Campaign – President Obama WINS

Hey. The kids actually ARE listening to you!

Nickelodeon has announced the winner of their Kids Pick the President Campaign — and it’s President Barack Obama!

Thanks, Kids!

via Nick.com:

“President Obama received 65 percent of the vote and former Governor Mitt Romney received 35 percent,” the network said. “In order to more closely replicate the actual election, and to ensure the results were more authentic, this year the voting was limited to one vote per electronic device. Kids were able to cast their votes online from Oct. 15 to Oct. 22.”

President Obama sat with Nick News at the White House to answer kids’ questions and aired previously taped video clips of Romney addressing issues raised by kids. Romney was unable to participate in the special.

“What politicians do definitely affects kids but for me, it’s not about who wins,” Ellerbee said in a prepared statement. “It’s about creating tomorrow’s voters. Democracy takes work. We’re the practice field.”

“Since it began in 1988, kids have correctly picked the winner (in advance of the national election) five out of the last six times,” the network said. “More than half a million votes were cast in the network’s online poll.”

So. What does this mean?  The odds-makers in Vegas would be happy to have a chat with you.  THAT’S what it means.  Oh, it also means that kids are indeed listening to their parents about some things of importance.
